Board approves consent agenda, leases and capital items; honors staff and students

The Hamilton County Board of Education approved a slate of consent-agenda items and multiple administrative actions by unanimous roll-call votes during its meeting.

Actions approved included updated job class descriptions; authorization of CMAR procurement for the Gateway Career Technical Education Building; approval to build the Clifton Hills office; a lease option for the Chattanooga Police Department; and multiple capital and project items (turf upgrades at Lookout Mountain, a stream-restoration project tied to Red Bank High School, and four district policies on second and final reading). Each recorded vote on these consent or administrative items was 11-0.

The board also accepted a House Joint Resolution (HJR 1192), read at the meeting, that commended Hamilton County Schools after the district provided workspace and logistical support to the Chattanooga Police Department during a mold remediation; Assistant Chief Rusty Morrison of the Chattanooga Police Department described the district as a "true servant leader" for providing clean, secure workspace for more than 100 employees during the incident.

Separately, the board presented several awards and recognitions: Greg Wilkie (Eastside Elementary principal) led a brief reflection on leadership during the pledge; Jennifer Fields (CSLA) was named Hamilton County Librarian of the Year; Ashley Rendo received the George Kilgore Initiative Award and a $1,000 scholarship; and the district highlighted its Kids Heart Challenge and blood-drive partnerships, noting Allen Elementary raised $16,000 this year and the district’s blood drive program reported more than 4,700 lives impacted last year.

The meeting closed with announcements of upcoming dates, and the board adjourned.
