The Gage County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 5 approved a higher property tax request for fiscal 2012–13 and adopted the county budget for the year beginning July 1, 2012.
At a statutorily required public hearing, the board set the 2012–13 property tax request at $8,233,491.22, up from $7,943,022.04 the prior year. The county noted that applying last year’s levy to 2012 valuations would have produced a slightly lower levy than the one the board adopted (the board-recorded proposed levy to fund the request is .394647). The board then adopted the full county budget by formal resolution.
The budget adoption followed the public hearing required under Nebraska law. Board members said the increase reflected final appropriations the county must make this year and adjustments to departmental needs. The board’s actions included several smaller budget amendments earlier in June to cover shortfalls in judicial and corrections budgets.
Procedure and next steps: The county clerk recorded the resolution after the hearing. The budget now governs county appropriations for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2012; the board will implement the levy and the Treasurer will collect taxes under state rules.
Provenance: The budget hearing, the stated tax figures, and the board’s adoption are recorded in the board minutes during the Sept. 5 meeting and the adopting resolution (board segments: SEG 236–SEG 239).
