Classified staff urge better communication and inclusion after retirement incentive rollout

Two speakers representing classified staff used the public-comment period to voice strong concerns about how recent retirement incentives and staffing changes were communicated to classified employees.
Leo, identified in the meeting as the labor representative assigned by CSEA (speaker 12), said classified staff are the “backbone” of the schools and described being left out of decision-making. He said classified employees learned about Village Elementary instructional aide reassignments after the fact and that the district did not consult or notify the classified bargaining unit in advance. He asked the board and district leadership to give classified bargaining representatives earlier notice and meaningful input.
Diane Bechtel (speaker 22) spoke next on behalf of classified staff and described the handling of the retirement incentive process as a “stressful last-minute decision” that lacked adequate communication and time for deliberation. She asked the board to examine district administrative growth versus enrollment declines and to ensure classified staff are included in compensation and incentive discussions concurrently with certificated staff.
Board members did not take immediate action during the meeting on these public comments; trustees thanked the speakers and the meeting proceeded to closing business and adjournment.
