Fargo Fire Department pins six firefighters as new captains

The promotions recognize both time in service and new leadership responsibilities within the Fargo Fire Department, which Lorenz described as having 149 full-time employees operating from eight stations and several specialty divisions. "As a successful fire department, we're the most successful when we can prevent every emergency from happening," Lorenz said, citing the department's focus on prevention and the duties of the Fire Prevention Office, which includes a Fire Marshal, an assistant and six deputy marshals.
Mayor Tim Mahoney, who attended the ceremony, congratulated the officers on their advancement. "Promotions like these are earned through years of commitment and hard work," Mahoney said, and called firefighters "ambassadors of the city of Fargo." Fargo City Commissioner and Deputy Mayor Denise Kolpak also praised the new captains, noting that captains "set the tone for their crews" and thanking families for their support.
Division Chief Craig Nelson read the promotion details and assignments provided by the department. According to Nelson, the promotions and assignment dates were: Michael Holly, training division, promoted 11/10/2025 (badge #486; 9 years of service); Casey Gibson, A shift, promoted 12/08/2025 (badge #475; 11 years); Rod Weigel, B shift, promoted 12/08/2025 (badge #483; 10 years); Troy Barovich, C shift, promoted 12/08/2025 (badge #490; 8 years); Gavin Pollard, A shift, promoted 01/05/2026 (badge #474; 11 years); and Clayton Roscoe, A shift, promoted 03/16/2026 (badge #453; 14 years).
Lorenz described the department's core-values acronym and expectations for the new captains, and the ceremony concluded with family members performing the pinning, a handshake line and brief remarks of thanks. "This concludes the ceremony," Nelson said as the event closed.
The event was ceremonial; no policy votes or formal board actions were recorded during the program.
