Committee member urges review of 2026–27 school calendar after parents’ concerns; majority says calendar already approved
Summary
A school committee member asked the full committee to revisit the 2026–27 calendar after receiving more than 200 emails from constituents worrying about extended breaks; the chair and several members said the calendar had been debated in subcommittee and voted twice and resisted reopening the vote, though members agreed on better communications and mitigation plans.

School committee member Miss Valentin asked the Springfield City School Committee to place the 2026–27 school calendar on an upcoming agenda for revision, saying she had received hundreds of emails from constituents concerned about extended breaks and the impact on families, multilingual learners and exceptional learners.
Valentin said the calendar's extended break pattern disrupts continuity, complicates work and childcare arrangements and may harm students who rely on consistent services and testing preparation. She asked the committee to formally revisit the calendar and consider mitigation measures or changes.
The chair responded that the calendar had been reviewed in subcommittee, was presented with superintendent input and had been voted on twice by the committee, nearly unanimously, and that the leadership would stand by that decision. Several long‑serving members urged better communication, more inclusive community surveying and clearer mitigation (meals, town halls, summer supports) rather than an immediate revote. Others — including newer committee members — said they had received constituent contacts and supported further conversation.
Committee members described a recent effort to assemble community feedback and said district staff had already begun planning mitigations such as meal distribution and summer outreach. Vice Chair Naylor and others stressed the importance of family engagement and asked administration to produce a communication plan that explains supports available during extended breaks.
No re‑vote took place at the meeting. The chair said the committee would not reopen the calendar immediately but acknowledged the need for better outreach and asked staff to accelerate communication about mitigation services and town halls before summer.
