At a glance: school committee approves minutes, contracts, appropriations and DESE grants

The Springfield City School Committee used roll‑call votes at its May 20 meeting to approve minutes, personnel agreements, budget appropriations and several state grants.

Key formal actions approved by roll call included: approval of minutes for special and regular meetings (03/30/2026; 04/09/2026); acceptance of a tentative Memorandum of Agreement with the Technical Employees Association reached after executive session; and an appropriation of $15,749,906 from carryover and surplus funds to cover investments listed in the meeting folder (curriculum, PD, ELL, network and equipment replacement, tuition and other student‑centered items). Chief Patrick Roche and the superintendent explained that these are carryover funds, not ongoing surplus, and are intended for one‑time investments.

The committee also approved the expenditure of $25,000 from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to plan CTE program expansion and $100,000 in DESE funds to support training and implementation of updated regulations about time‑out practices for exceptional learners; district officials said the latter will fund professional development and alternatives to time‑out rooms.

Motions were moved, seconded and adopted by roll call; the clerk recorded members answering in the affirmative for the items presented. No action on controversial amendments was taken at the meeting; members thanked staff and negotiators for work on the MOA and the administrators who prepared the appropriation details.
