Commission hears plan to implement Dayton's student vision via a mayor's children's cabinet and external fellowships

Erica Fields, senior director of partnerships and community impact for Learn to Earn Dayton, presented Resolution 6,930-3206 supporting adoption of the Student Vision for Dayton and a plan to implement the plan through a mayor's children's cabinet (SEG 671–681).
Fields said the Student Vision grew from community engagement in 2023 and articulates four priorities that youth identified: leadership development; mental health and bullying prevention; college- and career-readiness; and safe, supportive neighborhoods. The submitted plan includes a vision, goals, strategies, a theory of action and an implementation tracker to measure progress (SEG 703–711).
To support implementation, Fields outlined two external supports her organization recommends: participation in the City Accelerator (a community-of-practice run by StriveTogether, Harvard Ed Redesign, and Results for America), with work starting July 2026, and a FUSE Executive Fellowship to embed an executive in local government (FUSE would cover 90% of that cost, with placement in fall 2026) (SEG 768–804; SEG 799–803). She emphasized the need for youth representation at the cabinet table and for a community-centered implementation process (SEG 751–757).
Commissioners praised the plan and stressed implementation. Commissioner Beckham said she had helped bring the work forward and is "very excited" for the cabinet; Commissioner Fairchild, Schell and Joseph also commended the initiative and asked staff to coordinate next steps and publicize the presentation materials online (SEG 816–874). The resolution was presented as a first reading and Commissioners asked staff to return with further implementation details and metrics as part of future discussions.
