The Baker County Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday to designate part of U.S. Highway 90 in honor of the late Judge John J. Cruz Jr.
Representative Brandon, who appeared before the commissioners, asked the board to adopt a local resolution supporting state legislation that names the roadway segment for Cruz. "He was a real favorite son of Baker County," Representative Brandon said, describing Cruz's service as a state legislator and circuit judge and noting his ties to the local community.
County staff read Resolution 2026‑21, which identifies the corridor between North Third Street and the Nassau County line as the "Honorable John J. Cruz Jr. Memorial Highway." Commissioner (mover) brought the resolution forward and the board approved it by voice vote; the motion carried.
Family members were present for the action. Representative Brandon said the daughters and sons of Judge Cruz were moved by the recognition and that the state Department of Transportation will place memorial signage once local approval is received. Chair (S1) and other commissioners thanked Representative Brandon for bringing the matter before the board.
The resolution is a ceremonial designation; DOT will handle signage and placement. The board did not identify any additional county funding or long-term maintenance obligations tied to the marker.
