County highway and facilities staff told the Codington County Board of Commissioners on May 19 that work on multiple road and infrastructure projects is underway and that seasonal maintenance is ramping up.
A highway official reported Grand Guard Construction is progressing on the 14th Avenue bridge: riprap and shoulder repairs are complete and concrete sidewalks remain to be poured; staff expect blacktop work to begin the first week of June if the hot-mix plant opens. Fram Construction will close 460th Avenue (from 169th to 170th Street) for approximately one month to repair damage to the east side of a bridge, the official said.
Seasonal maintenance updates included crack sealing with a new sealer through the end of May and plans to haul Purock from ConAg for chip sealing later in the season. Two highway maintenance employees are out on medical leave (one returning next month); the department is recruiting for a Maintenance II position starting at $27.66 per hour.
Facilities staff reported LED lighting upgrades in government buildings, tree cleanup after winter and spring winds, 633 park reservations yielding $81,007.50 in revenue (as of the end of Sunday), and campsite repairs caused by frost. They also said the mosquito fogger had electronics issues and staff are budgeting for a new machine next year.
The board approved a motion to surplus two highway items for sale on Purple Wave (an old crack sealer and a 1974 John Deere tractor) and to donate an old water tanker to Lake Area Technical College for non-road use; the action was approved by voice vote.
The board’s decisions allocate routine maintenance and asset-disposal steps and authorize staff to continue with contracted repairs and planned seasonal work.
