Codington County accepts state grant to reimburse community health worker wages through May 2027

Codington County commissioners on May 19 approved acceptance of a state Department of Health contract to reimburse community health worker wages for the 2026–2027 contract year.
County staff told the board the contract runs June 1, 2026, through May 31, 2027, and reimburses up to $20,000 for each of the county’s two community health workers — roughly $39,000 in total — to be processed as reimbursement into the county’s general fund. "It is for reimbursement for up to $20,000 for each of our community health workers," a county staff member said during the meeting.
Staff and finance representatives explained the grant will be processed as a budget supplement: reimbursements will be received and then used to supplement the community services budget. The board voted to accept the contract by voice vote.
The grant is a renewal of the same annual funding the county received last year, county staff said. Officials said the funds will be used to support CHW wages; no changes to program scope or staffing levels were announced at the meeting.
The board also approved related personnel and wage-scale items during the same meeting that affect the community services office.
