Worcester County commissioners approve consent agenda, multiple procurement awards and a Pocomoke annexation

The Worcester County Commissioners on May 19 approved the consent agenda and a series of procurement awards, moving forward on water, solid-waste and parks projects across the county.
The board unanimously accepted the consent agenda, which packaged routine items 2 through 14. County Chief Administrative Officer Weston Young introduced subsequent items and staff recommended approvals for a string of contract awards.
Public Works recommended awarding the Central Landfill Cell 1 pump-station upgrades to TK Construction of Salisbury for $971,000; the board approved the contract. County staff said design work on the landfill's next cell is roughly 40% complete and that monitoring wells are being installed, a prerequisite that will require the wells to be in place for one year before the new cell can be built.
The board also approved a $496,750 award to AJT Homes of Salisbury for improvements to the Berlin Homeowner Convenience Center and a $559,000 repainting contract for the Glen Bridal Riddle water tower with Tank and Tower Restoration of Fairborn, Ohio. Recreation and Parks staff secured approval for replacement of the boat ramp, bulkhead and revetment at George Island Landing, awarding the work to the lowest responsive and responsible bidder.
Commissioners approved a request by the Board of Education to reallocate remaining funds from the Pocomoke Elementary School roof replacement project. County planning staff presented an annexation request for property at the corner of U.S. Route 13 (Ocean Highway) and Stockton Road — the site long identified as the future Wawa — and recommended a finding of consistency with the town’s comprehensive plan; the board voted to send a draft consistency letter to Pocomoke City.
Other routine approvals included an over-expenditure to buy radios for volunteer fire companies and approval to bid a water and wastewater rate study after reallocating $259,691 from prior budget authority. All motions on awards and bids were seconded and carried by voice vote; when a tally was recorded it was either unanimous or noted as 6–0 with Commissioner Bunting absent.
The meeting closed with a reminder that a budget work session would follow the public meeting.
Quoted remarks in the meeting included praise for public works: “Public works can often be an unseen organization, but is always there quietly serving society,” a county public-works representative told commissioners while accepting recognition for Public Works Week.
The board’s actions advance multiple infrastructure projects that county staff said are needed to maintain services and prepare for future capacity; staff will return with contract documents and implementation steps as these projects move into construction.
