Committee reviews summer events, volunteer Eagle Scout projects and county updates

During the May 19 meeting the Franklin Township Open Space Advisory Committee reviewed upcoming community events and volunteer activity. Staff said National Trails Day will be observed with a bird walk at Negri Napodi on June 6, a firefly hike is planned for July 11 and the township’s Fourth of July and surrounding concerts will be held in early July; registration and promotional details will be posted on the township website.
Committee members recognized volunteer work: an Eagle Scout completed interpretive-sign replacements at Negri Napodi and another volunteer repaired boardwalk boards at a canal access; a Girl Scout has applied to repair and update six trail kiosks. The committee thanked volunteers and noted the projects reduce maintenance demands.
The committee also received updates from the environmental commission and Shade Tree committee: the environmental commission reviewed several residential site plans and reported a wetlands-delineation request for 200 Franklin Square Drive; the Shade Tree committee is seeking ordinance edits to standardize tree-caliper and replacement-tree definitions.
Next steps: staff will publicize events on the township website and coordinate volunteer support and committee feedback for the canal master-plan meeting and Shade Tree ordinance work.
