Olive Branch aldermen approve school rezoning, fire truck loan and several development items
Summary
At its May 19 meeting the Olive Branch Board of Aldermen approved a rezoning for a DeSoto County Schools Career Technical Center, authorized a 2% state loan for a new fire pumper, approved a contract for a Maples Memorial Park rendering, and passed several routine development motions including a preliminary plat and a construction change order.
The Olive Branch Board of Aldermen handled multiple development and procurement items on May 19 after completing a public hearing on a Trinity Park PUD amendment.
Among the actions the board took:
- Rezoning for DeSoto County Schools: The board approved a request to extricate ~35.99 acres from a PUD and to rezone about 42.5 acres from PUD/M-1 to the AR (agricultural/residential) district to accommodate a DeSoto County Schools Career Technical Center. Staff described programs the center would host — including fire science, law enforcement, sports medicine, cosmetology, automotive science and IT — and the board voted in favor after no public opposition was offered. Alderman Wallace moved to approve and Alderman Collins seconded.
- Loan for fire pumper: The board approved participation in a Mississippi Development Authority 2% loan program to acquire a Pierce Enforcer fire pumper with a snozzle; the city will finance the remainder with general funds and next year’s budget. City staff noted extended manufacturing lead times and recommended proceeding.
- Maples Memorial Park contract: The board approved a $6,500 contract with Urban Arch Associates for a color rendering and construction cost estimate to evaluate renovation and partial reuse options for the aging Maples Memorial building. The contract is an initial phase to inform potential budget decisions.
- The Villages at South Branch Phase 4A: The board approved a preliminary plat for 49 single-family lots in Phase 4A; planning staff said the plat aligns with the project text and recommended approval subject to standard conditions.
- Public Works Complex change order: The board approved Change Order No. 10 for the Olive Branch Public Works Complex in the additive amount of $22,437.69, increasing the contract to $8,836,370.95 and extending completion by 58 calendar days.
Other routine items included consent-agenda approvals, minutes adoption and direction to staff on several property-cleanup matters. The board adjourned regular session and went into executive session to discuss listed matters.
