The Coffee County board voted on May 30 to donate one surplus retired ambulance to the local police SWAT team, after a staff presentation that the unit was no longer needed in EMS inventory.
During new business the director explained the county has two retired ambulances: one already spoken for as a trade-in and another that had been reworked as a potential command unit but is at present unused. The director said donating the surplus unit to the police department would remove it from the county’s inventory and insurance and free maintenance budget dollars.
Chair moved to donate the vehicle and a committee member seconded the motion. The board approved the donation.
The director cautioned that purchasing must process the transfer and that the county’s purchasing committee may need to convene a special meeting to complete the disposition: “It has to go to purchasing. They have to call a special meeting of some committee of theirs to get rid of the asset,” he said. He added that, to his knowledge, no money will change hands and that the action will primarily be a title transfer.
The board approved the donation with the understanding staff will complete required purchasing and title-transfer steps before the asset leaves county inventory.
