Camden County temporarily reduces landfill rate for Brantley County fire debris

The Camden County Board of Commissioners, sitting as the Solid Waste Authority, approved a temporary reduced rate of $18.21 per ton for construction and debris (C&D) associated with the Brantley County wildfire cleanup. The reduced in‑county rate was approved for one year and applies only to verified fire‑related debris from Brantley County.

Solid Waste staff said Brantley County requested access to Camden’s landfill for C&D debris related to the fire and that the county will inspect and monitor each load to ensure it is fire‑related. Commissioner discussion focused on the need for an end date and strong monitoring to prevent misuse. The board amended the Solid Waste motion to include a one‑year limit and approved the amended motion by voice vote.

The motion directs staff to require manifests or identification for Brantley County loads and to inspect incoming material at the scale. Staff indicated Brantley County would use contractors to collect debris and establish a staging area; Camden will accept C&D only, not general municipal solid waste, under the discounted rate.

The reduced rate is intended to support regional recovery efforts and to recognize the exceptional cleanup burden resulting from the Brantley County wildfire. Commissioners said they can extend the arrangement if cleanup remains ongoing beyond the one‑year window.
