Board delays vote on Flock Safety OS-Plus after public concerns; police to present Jan. 26

The Waterford Township Board on Jan. 12 voted to postpone a final decision on a proposed three-year agreement to expand the police departments Flock Safety license-plate reader and video integration system (OS-Plus).

Police materials in the meeting packet said the department currently deploys 12 LPR cameras and plans to expand to 16, expects a Drone-First Responder program in 2026, and proposes purchasing Flock OS-Plus for an annual cost of $20,000 (total $60,000 over three years). The packet also said funds would come from the Police Departments restricted-use federal drug forfeiture account and that the department has used Flock tools in investigations.

Lt. Scott Good addressed the board at the meeting. Trustees debated timing and public concerns; an initial motion to postpone for a work session failed for lack of a second. The board later voted to postpone final approval until the Jan. 26 regular meeting and directed the Police Chief to present details at that session so trustees and the public can review technology, usage, and data-retention practices before a vote.

Several residents had raised objections during public comment periods, citing privacy and data-retention worries. The record shows multiple named comments opposing the agreement, including from Mark Monohon, Drew Marcheski, Dillon Frost, Don Mills and others. One resident (Lila Ball) spoke in favor of a township single-source waste-hauler policy but did not address Flock.

Trustees did not adopt the agreement on Jan. 12; the item will return to the Jan. 26 meeting for further presentation and a possible vote.
