Morton trustees approve fire-code updates, business façade grants, equipment purchase and Verizon tower lease

At its regular meeting, the Village of Morton Board approved a package of administrative and capital items, including updated fire and life-safety codes, two business district grants, a wheel loader procurement and a water-tower lease amendment with Verizon Wireless.
The Director of Fire and Emergency Services (speaker 6) presented Ordinance 27-03 to adopt the 2021 edition of the NFPA life-safety code, NFPA 855 addressing energy-storage/battery systems, and the 2024 edition of the International Fire Code. Trustees called the roll and approved the ordinance.
The village administrator (speaker 5) presented two Business District Commission grant recommendations: GNW Enterprises for 107–109 W. Jefferson (project cost $20,001.77; recommended grant $10,000 to remove upper-level brick, install siding and repaint) and Elita 1989 Inc. for 25 E. Adams (project cost $6,054; recommended grant $3,027 to update signage). The board voted to approve both grants.
The board also approved a Sourcewell purchase (waiver of formal bidding) from Altorfer for a 2026 Cat wheel loader for streets, gas, water distribution and wastewater departments at $220,227.28, including a trade-in credit and payoff of an existing loan. The director described operational uses including landscape-waste loading, winter salt operations and general material handling and noted budget timing would require appropriation in the FY27 budget.
Director of Public Works (speaker 4) presented Ordinance 27-06, described in the meeting as a fourth amendment to the village's water tower lease with Verizon Wireless. The director referenced an initial-year rent figure and a twentieth-year figure with 3% annual increases and said the board authorized him to execute the agreement; trustees approved the ordinance by roll call.
Other items on the consent agenda, including minutes from 05/04/2026 and bills, were approved by roll call earlier in the meeting.
