The Hayward City Council presented a proclamation declaring May 2026 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and invited leaders from local schools, parent groups and community organizations to speak.
Trustee Peter Buffetti (Hayward Unified School District) described the formation of the district's parent-led Asian Pacific Islander Community Initiative and urged greater representation in local elected bodies. Parent lead Lani Llamido, principal Lisa Torres Tess, APIC advisor Nylene Tamondong, library director Jenti Adleman, student Darren Thieu and nonprofit founder Teresa Huang each described programming, student events and volunteer efforts that underpin the month's observances.
Speakers emphasized family engagement, cultural programming at schools and the public library's planned events (including taiko drumming and a final book discussion). Council members and attendees applauded the presentations and took photos following the proclamation.
