Pembroke Pines to host University Drive celebration as $43 million corridor work begins

Assistant and district commissioners outlined the project's scope: a dedicated 7-foot northbound bike lane in one segment, a 10-foot shared-use path in another, upgraded mast-arm traffic signals at several intersections, citywide conversion to LED street lighting in project limits, drainage improvements and ADA-compliant curb ramps and signage. The project is intended to improve safety, multimodal access and corridor resilience. Construction officials and partner agencies will present 3D renderings and project drawings at the May 27 event.
Commissioners noted that U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz helped secure $5 million in federal community project funding for the work. Staff estimated the corridor improvements will complete in 2029 and emphasized the multi-agency collaboration necessary to deliver a corridor that serves commuters, businesses and neighborhoods.
The commission asked staff to post the event announcement and project materials on the city website so residents can attend the May 27 program or view the renderings online. No funding vote was required at the meeting; staff said federal and surtax allocations have been coordinated through MPO processes and that completion is forecast in multiple construction phases ending in 2029.
