Council names downtown alley for local artist Duane Flatmo following unanimous vote

The Eureka City Council voted unanimously on May 19 to name a downtown alley for artist Duane Flatmo, adopting a resolution finding the action exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act.
Council member Moulton introduced the proposal and recounted Flatmo’s broad contribution to the city’s visual identity and public art. Planning staff (Chris Loheffner) reported that the parks and recreation commission and later the planning commission reviewed the proposal and recommended approval; staff provided a draft resolution in the agenda packet and noted the naming meets municipal code requirements and would not cause duplicate street names.
One public commenter said the proposal “sounds pretty cool” and expressed tentative support. After brief council remarks celebrating Flatmo’s local impact, council member Moulton moved to adopt the resolution and the council recorded a 5–0 vote in favor.
The council’s resolution directs staff to install wayfinding signage referencing Flatmo’s contributions and completes the naming process after the planning commission’s recommendation. The council did not attach additional conditions or amendments to the resolution.
What’s next: staff will implement wayfinding signage and proceed with the administrative steps required to reflect the new alley name in city records.
