Council appoints Marcy Cameron interim coroner after brief interview

Butte Silver Bow — The Council of Commissioners unanimously appointed Marcy Cameron as interim coroner on May 20, 2026, following public comments in her support and a council-conducted interview during the regular meeting.

The appointment followed two public supporters' statements: resident Katie Dunville and Deputy Coroner Haley Den both urged the council to appoint Cameron, citing decades of experience. "She's been doing this work since the nineties," Katie Dunville said during public comment, describing Cameron as experienced, organized and compassionate.

During a short interview before the council, Cameron described core coroner duties and how she would carry them out. "The duties of the coroner are basically to respond to sudden, unexplained, suspicious deaths... we certify death certificates, we notify next of kin," Cameron said, outlining evidence-collection, fingerprinting and DNA steps, and stressing dignity for families. She said deputies have completed required training and that she and deputies track continuing education through statewide systems.

Chairman John Morgan moved to appoint Cameron as interim coroner effective immediately until the November election; the motion carried 10—6. The council noted Cameron will continue working at the health department at 50% capacity while serving as interim coroner.

The appointment was recorded as communication 2026-6248 and placed on file. The council said the interim appointment fills a statutory vacancy and that the position will be on the November ballot for the public to elect a coroner.
