Andalusia council approves permits, leases, park funding and appointments

Gun and knife show: The council approved a motion waiving building/permit requirements for participants at the annual gun and knife show scheduled for Aug. 15–16 at the Kiwanis Center. The mayor said the event typically includes about 75 or more tables. One council member voted no on that motion.
LBW Community College lease: Council members approved a three‑year lease renewal with LBW Community College for the former Covington Casket Factory office on North Cotton Street, with rent set at $12,000 per year effective April 2026.
Surplus brick pavers: The council approved purchase of surplus brick pavers at a cost of $59,239.60 to be paid from the city’s capital account for public‑works use and park construction.
Heritage Park pavilion and restrooms: The council adopted Resolution 2026‑13 to appropriate $279,768.70 from the 2022 Series A bond issue for a pavilion at Heritage Park and adopted Resolution 2026‑14 to appropriate about $97,000 from the same bond account to construct indoor family restrooms adjacent to an existing historic brick building in the park.
Appointments: The council approved Steve Bozeman’s nomination to the recreation board. The mayor announced his appointment of Sammy Glover to the housing authority for another term, a mayoral appointment made under statute without a council vote.
The meeting closed after a brief Memorial Day announcement from the mayor about observances at Veterans Memorial Park.
