Brighton commission advances museum assessment, cemetery marker search, outreach and training plans

Emma Lane reported the City is working on a Historic Structure Assessment (HSA) for the 1886 Church, which will serve as the city’s new museum; grant documents for the HSA were scheduled for review on April 17, 2026, and progress on the assessment was described as expected to begin soon.
Lane also said the Pioneer Cemetery memorial markers project is awaiting a response from an appropriate cemetery preservation specialist; because the original COA for the markers required historically similar stone markers, switching to metal markers is not a direct path despite the difficulty in locating suitable stone markers. Commissioners discussed attending a historic cemeteries workshop in Denver to make contacts for the project.
For outreach and fundraising, Lane printed 60 "This Place Matters" signs with a QR code linking to the city’s Historic Preservation website for use during Historic Preservation Month in May. Commissioners agreed to approach downtown businesses and residences to display signs; Commissioner Sophia Imperioli will draft a social media post for staff to publish. The commission plans a proclamation for Historic Preservation Month for City Council consideration (target May 5). Imperioli also will research artists and merchandise options (stickers or other items) for fundraising; Commissioner Barbara Heumann noted a previously printed coloring book that could be repurposed.
Commission training: Commissioners agreed May 23, 2026 for in-person survey training, to be coordinated by Vice Chair Murphy and staff; staff recommended an online historic survey training on April 22, 2026 for commissioners and staff. The commission also reviewed museum packet updates and discussed whether a souvenir plate for the 1886 Church would be purchased or donated; budget review will follow if the plate is purchased.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with the HSA grant review and outreach preparations, commissioners will pursue survey training and fundraising actions, and the commission will continue work on cemetery markers and museum planning at upcoming meetings.
