Committee hears update on generative AI; system office says existing privacy rules cover core risks

The Technology Committee received an update on generative AI policy work on May 19 and was told that the system office’s compliance review found existing privacy rules cover the chief data-protection risks.
CIO Michael Mondrain said compliance staff analyzed where AI-specific policy is needed and concluded that current policies already address data-privacy considerations. “This thing policy already covers all of the data privacy considerations around around AI,” he said, while noting potential exposure when tools are used without contractual protections.
Mondrain said the academic side (including the IRIS committee) remains engaged on classroom and research concerns, and the system office will now identify deltas and draft additional guidance. Committee leaders agreed to continue coordinated conversations and aim to advance further AI policy elements for the fall semester.
No formal action was taken; the update was informational and the system office will report back as policy development continues.
