Board hears updates on roads, bridge damage and flood-relief kits; inspectors to review nature-center bridge

County staff updated the board on several infrastructure and public-safety items, including secondary-roads projects, a bridge damaged by a fallen tree at the nature center, continued park flooding concerns and free flood-cleanup kits available from the Salvation Army.

Secondary-roads staff reported that major projects are largely complete, bridges are open and crews are now focusing on patching concrete and smaller repairs; drivers were warned to watch for one-lane closures and signage at active work sites. In discussion the roads official said paperwork associated with federal funds remains and the crew is readying the post-project paperwork effort.

Nature-center staff described rainwater entering the nature-center building, soaked floors, ruined historic maps and a tree that fell on a bridge railing. Staff said the railing "is not a structural component," but that an inspection would determine whether the substructure had been affected; the county conducts biannual bridge inspections and staff said they would try to roll this inspection into the scheduled effort. The staff member also noted the river remained just below flood stage after a heavy rain in Davenport and that the office was reluctant to install docks while levels remained high.

An emergency-management speaker told the board that Salvation Army flood kits — including bleach, gloves and cleanup supplies — are available to residents with flooded basements and that there is no income requirement to receive a kit. Board members asked staff to pursue a bridge inspection and monitor flood-prone sites as weather conditions evolve.
