Springfield Township music program again named a top community in music education; students honored

The Springfield Township School Board on Monday recognized the district’s music educators and students after the district was again honored by the NAMM Foundation as one of the nation’s best communities in music education.

"The district is getting recognized once again for one of the best communities in music education," Tom Kelly, a representative of the NAMM Foundation, told the board. The organization’s application is lengthy, Kelly said, and the award reflects sustained program breadth and community support.

Superintendent Dr. Yannickone, joining the meeting remotely, told the board the district’s Festival of the Arts and recent concerts showed strong student participation and musical achievement. She noted the Springfield Township Education Foundation has donated more than $70,000 over five years to support music, STEM and scholarships for graduating seniors.

The board presented certificates to student performers, including junior clarinetist Jordana Albanese, who qualified for Region 6 Band, and acknowledged Isaac Darga for regional recognition and qualifying for All-State (he did not attend because it conflicted with prom weekend). Choir director Amy Benton introduced both students and said the district values early music instruction that leads to later success.

The recognition highlights ongoing work in the K–12 music program, district leaders said. The board asked music staff to return in future meetings with updates as the district continues concerts and related events this spring.

The board’s public materials note the education foundation’s donations support music, STEM and scholarships and have helped underwrite programming and student opportunities.
