Board honors students and coaches; Coach Sandra outlines track expansion

At its May 20 meeting the Marion County Board of Education set aside time to recognize student achievements across academics, technology and athletics and to hear from coaches about program growth.

Superintendent Brady called forward students selected for Governor's Scholars programs and other honors and invited them to share their focus areas and next steps. Students named destinations such as Morehead and Murray and described concentration areas including film studies, journalism and political/legal issues.

Staff also recognized Glaxheim Elementary's STLP winners and a group of students who completed Project Lead the Way capstones. Brooklyn Day, a senior, was recognized for qualifying for the HOSA national competition in the home health aide event and described the two-stage qualifying process required to reach nationals.

Coach Sandra provided an extended update on the track program, saying the staff added two assistant coaches and that new coaching depth contributed to measurable improvement in jump, throw and distance events. She said the team will begin recruiting younger athletes (accepting sixth graders for training, though sixth graders remain ineligible for competition until seventh grade) and noted record-breaking performances, including a school record in the 3,200.

Board members and attendees took photos and congratulated students and coaches. Superintendent Brady and the board framed the recognitions as part of the district's broader focus on student opportunities and community support.

The meeting continued with curricular and budget business after recognitions.
