Wyandotte County adopts preemptive disaster declaration ahead of World Cup events

The Unified Government commission voted unanimously May 21 to adopt a preemptive disaster declaration to allow faster access to state and regional emergency resources during World Cup events.
David Johnson, the county administrator, introduced the measure and asked Jennifer Tarwater, acting director for emergency management, to explain its purpose. Tarwater said the declaration would let the county “expedite and get those resources from the state and beyond in a much quicker fashion” if severe weather or another emergency occurred during the World Cup.
The measure was framed as a precautionary step coordinated with neighboring host counties and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. Tarwater told the commission the action is intended to ensure the county is prepared now so it can act quickly if incidents occur.
With no additional public discussion, a commissioner moved to approve the resolution and the roll call recorded a 7–0 vote.
The commission’s action authorizes staff to request and accept expedited assistance if needed during World Cup events; no additional funding authorization or programmatic commitments were made as part of the vote. The item will remain part of the county’s emergency-management planning for the multi-jurisdictional event.
