Southern York County School District honors retiring staff, citing 143 years of combined service

At a board meeting of the Southern York County School District, leaders recognized nine staff members who are retiring, praising decades of service across classrooms, athletics, student support and facilities.
"It is an absolute privilege to stand before you tonight to recognize and thank Melissa Basner for 30 years of service to the Southern York County School District," said Dr. Bell, who introduced the retiree recognitions. Dr. Bell detailed Basner's start date (Feb. 12, 1996), her degrees from Messiah College and Penn State, curriculum work and frequent professional development and conference representation.
The board chair recognized Susan "Sue" Green for 19 years with the district, noting she came to the district as business manager and finished her career as CFO and executive director. The chair said Green will remain a board member into next year to aid transition.
Mr. Buffington praised Keith McFatridge for his custodial leadership at the high school since March 2022 and noted his roughly 20 prior years in another district and long community service, including many years as a volunteer firefighter.
Dr. Sterner recognized Patricia "Patty" McGee for long service that began in 2004 and spanned roles as a paraprofessional across autistic support, alternative education, extended school year programs and the digital academy; Sterner said McGee also led educational support staff and was a visible presence at school events. Sterner also honored Bill Kerr for his teaching and athletic program roles at Susquehannock.
Dr. Hollinger recognized Tammy Heath, a personal care assistant at Southern Elementary School since September 2023, for close, trust-building work with a particular student and for strengthening families' confidence in the district's services; Heath was not present, attending a family graduation.
Representing Shrewsbury Elementary, Dr. Van Boorst honored three retirees: Marie Berman, a school nurse who joined the district in September 2020 and previously worked in public service and nursing education; Nina "Naina" Kenny, a learning support teacher appointed Aug. 20, 2001, credited with more than 30 years in education and organizing an annual cancer 5K; and Barb Kroner, an instructional assistant since Aug. 21, 2008, noted for her positive presence, building photography and staff engagement work.
The recognition segment closed with the chair noting a combined 143 years of service across the retirees and the board offering a final round of applause. No policy votes or formal actions were recorded during the recognition portion of the meeting.
