The presenter, a SCORE representative, said the chapter is part of a national organization with more than 200 chapters and that the Lowcountry chapter supports Hampton County, Colleton County, Beaufort County and Jasper County. “Score is a national organization that provides services for small businesses,” the presenter said.
Why it matters: Local mentors can help entrepreneurs meet requirements for funding and licensing and, the presenter said, improve the odds that a new business will survive. “Businesses that have a mentor are 5 times more successful in opening a business and keeping a business,” the presenter said, framing mentorship as a central benefit.
The presenter outlined services and formats: one-on-one mentoring at no charge, available face to face, online, by phone and by email, plus educational classes offered locally and through the national chapters. For entrepreneurs unsure how to start, the presenter said SCORE helps with business plans, market focus and financial forecasts and can assist clients through licensing processes.
The presenter gave a client example: a nurse who used SCORE’s assistance to develop a business plan, financial forecast and licensing strategy for a concierge nursing business; that client later opened a medical-assistance training school near Argent Road. The presenter said SCORE maintains a referral list of more than 35 local resources—banks, marketing firms and accountants—to help businesses with operations and growth.
The presenter also noted volunteers’ sector experience, saying mentors include bankers, healthcare professionals, real-estate and manufacturing specialists and former government contracting staff. “We have about 30 volunteers in the Lowcountry,” the presenter said, thanking them for their work.
