Council approves design contract for Fire Station 8; $3.03 million in state funding cited

Deputy Chief Jeff Wenzel asked the council for advice and consent to award an RFP contract to an architectural firm for design and planning of Fire Station 8. Wenzel said the proposal for design and planning is $712,199.69 and described the scope to include site assessment, feasibility study, design documents, utility extension review, site grading, construction plans and bidding/administration services. "The proposal of the design and planning of Fire Station 8 is $712,199.69," Wenzel said.
Wenzel told the council that the city previously received $3,034,250 in state appropriations toward design and construction for Fire Station 8. City staff recommended approval. Councilors praised the project as an investment in public safety and noted growth in the southern part of the city that increases call volume. The mayor and council discussed an optimistic timeline with construction potentially starting in July 2025 but acknowledged additional funding will be needed for building construction beyond design.
Council voted by roll call to approve C69; no amendments were proposed. The council emphasized the project's role in expanding first-responder capacity in growing neighborhoods and said staff will continue to manage funding and timing as the project moves from design to construction.
