Pender commissioners formally back UNC Wilmington's proposed medical school

The Pender County Board of Commissioners voted Monday to express formal support for the University of North Carolina Wilmington's proposal to develop a doctor of medicine program that would include both a traditional four-year track and an accelerated three-year track focused on primary care.
County manager presented the resolution, saying the program is intended to expand medical education opportunities in southeastern North Carolina and strengthen regional workforce capacity. "We rank pretty low in medical students per capita, so we know we need more medical education here," the manager said during his presentation.
The resolution, which the board passed by voice vote, urges the UNC Board of Governors to authorize planning and development of the program and encourages continued collaboration between UNCW, local hospitals, federally qualified health centers and other regional partners.
Commissioners framed the vote as supporting workforce development and local health-care capacity; no formal funding obligation was attached to the resolution. The motion carried by voice vote after a motion and second.
The board did not set any county-level financial commitments as part of the resolution; the action is a statement of local support intended for submission to the UNC Board of Governors.
