Jefferson County commissioners approve fiber permit, fireworks display and move early voting location

At its May 11, 2026 meeting, the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners approved a set of routine administrative items including a right-of-way permit for fiber installation, a special event fireworks permit and a relocation of the early voting site.
Public Works Director Ben Domann asked the board to sign a right-of-way permit to allow Giant Communications to install and run fiber lines; Commissioner Doug Walbridge moved approval and the board voted unanimously.
Community Development Director Stephan Metzger presented Special Event Permit SE2026-03 for a fireworks exhibition scheduled July 4, 2026 (9:30–10:15 p.m.) at the King property, 13525 K‑92 Highway in Oskaloosa, with July 5 as a backup date. The board approved the permit unanimously.
Commissioner David Christy moved to relocate early voting downstairs to the Planning and Zoning office, with Stephan Metzger moving across the hall; the motion passed unanimously. The board also authorized the chairman to sign two previously approved quitclaim deeds and approved routine minutes and vouchers earlier in the session.
Under K.S.A. 25-2708 (preservation of ballots), the board designated Carissa Allen (Democrat) and Douglas Bond (Republican) to witness destruction of expired ballots; that motion passed unanimously.
All procedural motions were recorded as moved, seconded and approved by unanimous vote.
