Jefferson County commissioners approve weed report, multiple appointments and travel requests

At their Feb. 23 meeting, Jefferson County commissioners approved the 2025 Noxious Weed Eradication Progress Report and a 2026 management plan, confirmed two local appointments, authorized several staff travel and training requests (some grant‑funded), and approved a property inspection agreement and other routine business.
Commissioner David Christy, Commissioner Doug Walbridge and Commissioner Richard Malm on Monday approved several routine administrative items at the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners meeting in Oskaloosa.
Public Works Director Ben Domann presented the Jefferson County Auxiliary Services 2025 Noxious Weed Eradication Progress Report and the county’s 2026 Management Plan; the commissioners voted to approve both documents for submission to the State of Kansas. Commissioner Doug Walbridge moved to approve the reports and Commissioner Richard Malm seconded; the board recorded unanimous support.
Community Development Director Stephan Metzger introduced Andrea Weishaubt, a professional land surveyor and business owner, for appointment to the Jefferson County Planning Commission; the commission approved her nomination. The board also approved the nomination of Ben Winsor to a three‑year term on the Jefferson County Fair Board.
The board approved multiple travel and training requests for county staff. Approved items included attendance at the KHCHA Spring Conference (April 8–9), the Kansas Alliance for Drug Endangered Children training (April 27–28, grant‑funded), the Kansas Association of Local Health Departments mid‑year meeting (June 15–17) and the National Drug Endangered Children Conference (May 4–9). Several of the trainings were funded in whole or part by grants, as noted at the meeting.
Emergency Services Director James Tweed reported that a building project in Perry is finishing this week and noted upcoming supervisor interviews and department vehicle needs. Emergency Manager Keith Jeffers told the board Jefferson County will play a limited role in World Cup soccer events in the region and that local Medical Reserve Corps/CERT plans to operate two first‑aid/cooling stations.
The board also approved an amended Property Inspection Hold‑Harmless Agreement allowing Melinda S. Guffey to inspect county property at 109040 Navajo Lane March 1–7, 2026, and completed routine business including approval of prior meeting minutes and vouchers.
The board recessed into an executive session to discuss attorney‑client privileged legal advice and county safety issues; the chair stated no binding action resulted from the closed session. The meeting adjourned with the next regular session scheduled for March 3, 2026.
