Supervisor Hillary Ronan introduced the commendation and criticized the district attorney's office for not renewing Coleman's consultant contract: "I just think it's really a shame that district attorney Brooke Jenkins would fire a city contractor, who is beloved by the immigrant rights community," Ronan said on the dais. Ronan outlined Coleman's work reviewing hundreds of 1473.7 motions and said the decision not to renew his contract was a "disservice" to families who benefited from his work.
Coleman addressed the board and recounted establishing a program to handle thousands of motions after the 2017 law change, saying he had approved relief in 98.6% of the motions he reviewed and had coordinated with judges and clerks to streamline hearings. He said that although San Francisco's DA office chose not to renew his contract, he has accepted an opportunity to continue immigration-relief work in Marin County under District Attorney Lori Frugoli.
The commendation was presented as an acknowledgement of Coleman's career and the role his post-conviction work has had in preventing deportation for many clients. The board offered commendation remarks and applause; no formal policy action regarding the DA's personnel decision was taken at the meeting.
