The Monrovia Unified School District board approved a memorandum of agreement to host an eight‑week summer pool program at Monrovia High School, drawing on a three‑party partnership with the City of Monrovia and the Santa Anita Family YMCA.
Staff said the program will run Monday–Friday and Saturday hours for community use while preserving scheduled school‑use times in the evenings. The City will contribute $8,000 toward operating costs and provide an AED; the YMCA will supply lifeguards, rescue and lesson equipment and operate swim lessons and lap and recreational swim. District maintenance staff will operate and maintain the facility.
Trustees asked whether priority would be given to Monrovia residents during open swim; staff said that was the intent and that the steering committee can consider residency rules. District staff said they plan two lifeguards on duty to support a 50‑person capacity (staffing two lifeguards corresponds to 1:25 proposed lifeguard ratio). Board members asked about sanitation protocols and contingencies for contamination events; operations staff described testing and chemical‑balance measures and said evacuation and draining are considered only in severe incidents.
The MOA passed by roll call 3–0. Staff said promotional materials and detailed scheduling will be posted pending final YMCA organizational approvals for pricing and lesson structures.
