District highlights decade-long partnership with Arc transition coordinators for students with disabilities

District staff outlined a more-than-10-year partnership with The Arc of Rensselaer County that places transition coordinators in the district to help juniors and seniors with IEPs and 504 plans plan postsecondary goals and access adult services.
The Arc representatives said two transition coordinators support roughly 40–45 students this year, working with families during CSE meetings, helping with applications to state agencies such as Access VR and OPWDD, connecting students to college-disability services and to paid summer employment programs such as Albany County’s Summer Youth Employment. "These transition coordinators connect families with outside agencies and help students build practical skills they’ll need once they graduate," the Arc speaker said.
Board members thanked the Arc staff and suggested bringing students who have benefited from transition services to future meetings and events so the district can showcase outcomes.
Staff said the partnership helps students gain workplace experiences and, for some, a Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) pathway that can appear as a seal on their diploma.
