Cohoes expands career-pathways efforts, signs up 37 businesses for career fair

Jen Hynia, the district’s career education coordinator, briefed the board May 20 on career-pathway activities and employer partnerships that she said expanded this year.
Hynia said the district held several "Pizza with Professionals" sessions and three small career fairs during lunches and study halls; 37 businesses have already signed up for the large career fair scheduled next Friday, up from 21 last year. "Lots of different people coming in to educate the kids," she said, listing construction firms, the U.S. Navy and a local school of massage therapy among past partners.
Hynia described a range of pathway activities — workplace visits to Hudson Valley, Career Jam events in the fall, after-school health-care workshops that expose students to occupations from physicians to histotechnology, and the creation of district internships such as student athletic director, school spirit coordinator and store assistant. She said some internships and partnership opportunities were funded or supported through external grants and military-sponsored professional development.
Board members thanked Hynia and encouraged the district to continue developing "grow-your-own" pathways and to showcase student outcomes at public events. Hynia said applications for district internships will open for the September start of school.
