County Manager Thomas Weaver said Charter, Spectrum and Bingham Construction plan to install fiber throughout much of the county, with an in‑service projection of mid‑December; the companies plan routes through Fort Moore, Highway 26 and Industrial Park Road and expect roughly 90 percent county coverage when completed. Weaver also said ambulance fee collections have started, the cemetery work is nearly complete pending hydroseeding, and the county has submitted and received LMIG funds totaling about $355,000; a sewer grant application was accepted.
Pam Burgamy asked for permission to use county land beside the library for a garden and fenced reading area for children; she said the project would use remaining construction funds and must be ADA compliant. Commissioners agreed to consider the request and, if a formal vote is required, place it on a future agenda after confirming the parcel is not reserved for public works or fire‑department expansion.
Public Works Director Lou Beck reported road edge work, cemetery topsoil delivery and that Fort Moore had assisted at a successful rabies clinic. The board reviewed three solid‑waste bids to be awarded at the July 2 regular meeting: GFL — $20.00 per month plus $5 per tire; Jones Sanitation — $23.50 per month; Zero Waste — $25.52 per month. Commissioners discussed the condition of a cardboard compactor and options to replace or sell it; contract length was noted as one year with auto‑renewal provisions.
Other department updates: water (Teri Hancock) submitted its CCR and completed drying beds at Wells 2 and 3; recreation (Mordie Askew) is planning a late‑July back‑to‑school event; animal services (Samantha Hedgecoke) reported strong turnout at a rabies clinic and car show.
The board entered an executive session during the work session to discuss personnel and legal matters and instructed staff to revisit a disabled‑veteran tax refund matter and present it at a future work session.
The solid‑waste contract award and the library garden permitting were placed on the July 2 agenda for formal action.
