Plunge grand opening set for June 6; aquatics programming and international team use outlined

City recreation staff previewed the Plunge grand opening and reported steady progress on aquatics programming and facility operations as the new pool prepares to open to the public.

Linnea, a parks staff member, said the ribbon cutting for the Plunge will be June 6 (about 11–11:45 a.m.) followed by self-guided tours; the facility will host two ticketed public swim sessions in the afternoon (1:30–3 p.m. and 3:30–5 p.m.), with roughly 150 slots each. Residents with a recreation ID receive one complimentary wristband; non-residents or those without IDs pay $20.

Commissioner Mark reported strong program performance and said ESAC covered direct costs last month. He said programming begins June 15 and that several international teams will use the facility for training — Team Great Britain next week and Team USA in August — and staff expect other national teams to follow. He also said the capital campaign has raised about $2.2 million.

Commissioners discussed whether to continue the Aquatic Subcommittee or reduce its membership now that the pool is operational; staff noted that a council agenda item in June will discuss the roles and frequency of advisory committees, and that the commission could formalize a selection strategy for ongoing facility oversight.
