Macon County commissioners approve application for $500,000 PARTF grant to expand recreation facilities

Parks and Recreation Director Seth Adams told the Macon County Board of Commissioners that the county would apply for the 2026 Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant, the state's primary funding source for recreational facilities. Adams presented a proposed $1,150,000 project that would include a $350,000 amphitheater, a $450,000 multi-use covered court, a $300,000 restroom and tennis locker facility, and a 5% contingency. The state grant would cover up to $500,000 with a dollar-for-dollar local match; Adams said the county match would total $650,000.
Adams explained the application requires an up-to-date comprehensive/master plan for PARTF scoring; the board unanimously approved combining the 2005 overall master plan with the September 2023 site-specific master plan to meet that requirement. Commissioner Josh Young moved to approve the PARTF application; Commissioner Shearl seconded and the motion passed 52d0.
Adams also reported demolition for planned pickleball courts would begin in two weeks with soil testing and tree work complete and designs being finalized. The board did not authorize the match source at the meeting; financing and capital-priority trade-offs were discussed later in the meeting under capital priorities.
