Sustainability Commission plans outreach push, Bee City review and student awards

At its Jan. 21 meeting the Frederick County Sustainability Commission prioritized outreach and community engagement efforts, including tabling at the Mobilize Climate Summit, tours of past Sustainability Award winners, and a proposed outreach subcommittee.
Commissioner Rebecca Kraft proposed tabling and a tour series to showcase commission deliverables such as the Creek Relief program and Sustainability Awards; Kraft offered to form the outreach subcommittee and asked other commissioners to join. Commissioner Mitchel Jackson recommended expanding collaboration with other county commissions, municipal governments and private-sector partners, and suggested visiting past award winners as part of the tour program.
The commission heard updates on Bee City work: Sydney said the county application is under internal legal review for Executive Order language, with the city’s materials already submitted. For restoration work, Othello Park was identified as a rehabilitation site with a target volunteer date in April pending approvals and coordination with Parks & Recreation.
On student recognition, the subcommittee narrowed its focus to middle- and high-school science-fair participants; the commission discussed presenting certificates and potentially inviting selected students to present to the commission. Commissioners noted that any awards or formal recognition must conform to Open Meetings Act requirements.
Other items discussed included a possible partnership with Move for Hunger to collect household food donations; commissioners asked for more information before approving formal participation.
