Apache Junction council approves tentative 2026–27 budget, compensation plan and pension funding policy

Mayor Wilson called the special meeting of the City of Apache Junction to order May 18 and opened a public hearing on the city manager's proposed budget for fiscal year 2026–27, then closed the hearing after no members of the public spoke.
Matt, a city staff member who led the presentation, told the council the proposed budget and the classification and compensation schedule had been presented two weeks earlier and that staff were available to answer further questions. "This is required by state law each year to show our intent in how to fund the pension policy," Matt said of the PSPRS funding policy the council later considered.
After closing the hearing the council took separate motions on linked items 1 and 2. A council member moved to adopt Resolution 26-26, the tentative budget for fiscal year 2026–27, which sets the tentative estimates for necessary public expenses and provides notice of the date, time and location for the final budget hearing; the motion was seconded and approved by roll call. The council then moved to adopt Resolution 26-27, declaring the filed classification and compensation documents (including the recruit and sworn compensation plan) as public record and declaring an emergency; that motion also carried on a unanimous roll-call vote.
On a separate agenda item the council considered and approved the City of Apache Junction's Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS) pension funding policy. Matt said the policy was unchanged from the prior presentation and that no public hearing was required for this item. A motion to approve the PSPRS pension funding policy was seconded and passed by unanimous roll call.
All recorded votes on the three items were unanimous in favor. After the votes Mayor Wilson adjourned the special meeting.
