Mission honors Cherryland High senior Lucas Garcia for scholarships, leadership and nonprofit work

Lucas Garcia, a senior at Cherryland High School, was recognized by the city of Mission for academic and extracurricular achievements and for community service.
Garcia told attendees he was “very honored to be selected by the city of Mission to be recognized for my academic excellence, and hopefully I can be a role model for people to come.” He said he received a UIL HEB scholarship, was recognized for athletics as the city’s sole athletic recipient and will represent Mission at the state level in athletics.
Garcia listed several extracurricular and leadership roles, saying he has participated in Business Professionals of America, the National Honor Society, Operation Smile, Chemistry Club, Student Council, RGB Lead and G Force. He said he will attend Dartmouth College this fall and intends to study government, economics and public policy before attending law school.
“Some of my other biggest accomplishments are serving within Texas Business Professionals of America,” Garcia said, adding that he served as an officer representing 15,000 members and as the only student on the board of directors representing high school voices across the state. He also said he co-founded a nonprofit called Bridge Builders for Refugees, which he stated has supported more than 300 families with supplies.
A staff member speaking for Sherryland ISD praised Garcia’s record. “Lucas exemplifies everything that we would hope for all of our students here at Sherryland ISD,” the staff member said, calling him “smart, talented, gifted” and thanking the community for opportunities that supported students.
Garcia closed by returning thanks to his teachers, family and community for their support. The recognition concluded with applause and no formal action or vote.
