The Dickinson County Commission discussed a property tax-relief application for a historic house that sustained fire damage. Staff and commissioners reviewed photos in the application and noted the house was not completely destroyed. County staff said the assessor/appraiser cannot provide a recommendation but can supply information in the application.
Several commissioners said they felt the damage appeared partial and that restoration might be possible; others cautioned about setting precedent if partial relief were granted. Commissioners agreed to postpone the matter and asked staff to invite the applicant and, if helpful, the assessor/appraiser to attend a future meeting so commissioners can ask questions and review evidence before deciding whether to grant relief and at what percentage (possible options discussed included 50%, 75% and 100%).
The commission did not take formal action on the relief request at the meeting and scheduled follow-up contact with the applicant to set a date for in-person questions and review of further documentation.
What happens next: Staff will contact the applicant to arrange appearance at a future meeting; commissioners will review additional documentation and may revisit the relief request after receiving further information.
