Tom Koss, president of a community school foundation, told the Unified School District of Antigo Board that the foundation holds more than $123,000 in a restricted account intended to cover critical maintenance at the Clara R. McKenna Aquatic Center and that donors have pledged additional funds.
"We have a $123,000 plus sitting in the separate account at the foundation aimed to make those repairs," Koss said, describing deferred-maintenance items including the front door, HVAC controls, bathroom partitions and tile repair.
Koss said the foundation has been working with the district since a March 18 special board meeting and that the motion from that meeting directed administration "to work with legal counsel to develop a plan of action for the continued operation and maintenance of the aquatic center." He added that two families have committed another $150,000 and suggested total community commitments could reach about $2 million.
District staff told the board the matter is largely in the hands of attorneys for both the foundation and the district, and that aside from a door repair overseen by the YMCA, most repair activity remains paused until counsel resolves the legal issues around fund use and governance.
Moderator/staff said the YMCA had been overseeing the front-door repair but additional work awaits legal direction. Board members did not vote to accept funds or direct repairs at the meeting; rather, they heard the foundation's offer and received status updates from district staff.
Why it matters: The aquatic center serves students and community members. The foundation said it has money set aside for safety-related repairs; the board emphasized that any use of funds will proceed under legal guidance and consistent with fund accounting rules.
What comes next: Attorneys for both sides are to coordinate next steps; district administration and the board will consider counsel guidance before authorizing or scheduling further repairs.
