The Unified School District of Antigo Board of Education opened its meeting with the seating of three new trustees and then moved immediately into reorganization, producing a prolonged deadlock over the board presidency.
Board business began with the public swearing of Jean Adams, Danny Nicholson and Mike Perisic and a roll call. Nominations for board officers followed. Diana accepted the clerk pro tem nomination and Glenda Oginski accepted the chair pro tem nomination. When the board took paper ballots for president, two nominees each received four votes and the board recorded a 4–4 tie after three rounds of voting, leaving the presidency unresolved.
Clerk and treasurer races were resolved: after an initial tie, Abby Maddock was elected board clerk in a subsequent paper ballot by a 5–3 tally, and Jill Maddock Nelson was confirmed as treasurer. The board also named Diana as secretary. Because state and board policy limit deadlock procedures, the board followed its rule to pause the presidency decision, appoint other officers and return to the matter after additional steps or until an additional member is seated.
Board members discussed next steps for the open seat on the board. The chair explained the timeline: letters of interest will be accepted at the district office through 3 p.m. on June 5 and a special called meeting to interview applicants will be held Monday, June 8, beginning no earlier than 6 p.m. The appointed person will face election at the next regular ballot cycle.
The meeting underlined the operational effect of the vacancy. One board member told colleagues the absence of an elected president makes agenda-setting and parliamentary guidance more difficult and praised interim leadership from members sharing procedural duties.
The board adjourned with the presidency unresolved but with clerk, treasurer and secretary positions filled and a clear schedule set for applicant interviews and follow-up votes.
Votes at a glance - Clerk: Abby Maddock elected after final paper ballot, 5–3. - Treasurer: Jill Maddock Nelson confirmed (vote recorded in meeting minutes). - Secretary: Diana appointed and accepted (uncontested). - Presidency: multiple paper ballots tied 4–4; matter deferred pending process outlined for filling vacancies and further ballots.
What’s next: Letters of interest for the vacant seat are due at the district office by 3 p.m. on June 5; candidate interviews are scheduled for a special meeting on June 8.
