Board committee frames math proficiency goal with attendance data; members ask for clearer minutes and transparency

The Parsippany-Troy Hills Township School District’s Teaching and Learning Committee reported on May 11 that it is focusing on a long-term board goal to increase mathematics proficiency for each subgroup by 2029 and requested additional data to measure progress and inform interventions.

Dr. Wright, who presented the committee’s report, told the board the committee reviewed summer-program offerings and asked administration for a spreadsheet linking program goals to the communities they serve so the board can better assess outcome measures. "We are hoping…to identify additional data to inform what standards might need to be addressed and what interventions were being done," Dr. Wright said.

The committee also proposed examining chronic absenteeism as part of its oversight work. Dr. Wright cited district data, saying, "I believe about an 8% chronic absenteeism challenge," and argued that absenteeism affects learning and standardized-test performance and therefore is relevant to the board's math-proficiency goal.

Several board members questioned whether requesting disaggregated attendance charts (by grade, race and gender) crossed into administrative duties and urged caution. Missus Abraham and others said they wanted more detailed minutes recording what the committee reviewed and why, so the full board could understand how the data would be used.
