District details multi-school summer renovations, solar installations and new badge locks
Summary

District operations staff briefed the board on extensive summer construction and security upgrades across Cary CCSD 26.
Mr. Martin described a range of projects: solar-panel installations at Briargate and Oak Knoll; roof materials staged for Carey Junior with roofing work set to begin in the coming weeks and solar panels to follow; a major interior update at Deerpath (new fire alarm panel, audio enhancement, boilers and chillers, new clock system, security cameras, wireless door locks with badge access, new LED lighting, luxury vinyl tile and new casework); window replacements and courtyard repairs at 3 Oaks; and paving, curbs and parking improvements at the transportation facility with a planned grand opening celebration late June or early July.
On school security locks, Mr. Martin said that classroom wireless locks will have key overrides and battery backups and that students will not be issued badges; a teacher or classroom helper will manage ingress for students who briefly exit and return. When asked whether a power outage would default locks to open, operations staff said the system includes building battery backup and locks have their own battery power; when asked how long battery power lasts, Mr. Martin estimated "probably about an hour." He added that keys are available to manually open locks if needed.
No votes were taken; the projects are continuing as scheduled and staff said photos and drone footage of work will be posted to the district's construction/operations web pages.
