Board told to approve 10'cent lunch-price increase; free and reduced rates unaffected

The Cary CCSD 26 committee was asked Aug. 18 to approve a 10'cent increase to paid student meal prices to comply with federal paid-lunch-equity guidance.
Treasurer Mr. Shepherd said the federal tool used to set paid prices requires the program be self-sustaining when federal reimbursements are excluded from the local calculation; that calculation shows the legally allowable increase is 10 cents. "As a result, it tells us that we have to raise our our lunch prices by 10¢," he said.
Mr. Shepherd gave the current rates: total paid lunch would be $3.25 and breakfast $1.80 after the increase. He told trustees the change would not affect students eligible for free or reduced-price meals; "If you are free or reduced, those prices ... will remain the same," he said. Officials noted the district had kept prices flat for several years but used prior surpluses to offset meal costs.
The committee did not take a final vote this evening; administration said it would present the recommendation for board approval at the next regular meeting.
